LEGO The Hobbit is a theme of LEGO sets based on The Hobbit trilogy of movies, and the book by J.R.R Tolkien. It is the result of an incredible partnership between The LEGO Group and Warner Bros, and the sets include scenes from the movie and minifigures of the characters. The first wave of sets in the series was released in 2012, and the following two waves were released in 2013 and 2014 to coincide with the release of each movie from the trilogy.

LEGO Riddles for the Ring is the first set in the series of LEGO The Hobbit products to be released. This set is inspired by the Bilbo Baggins and Gollum encounter in the dark passageways beneath The Misty Mountains.
The set includes 105 pieces, and 2 minifigures – Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. Bilbo, wearing his red jacket, comes with Sting – his trusty sword. He also has a fish piece, representing the raw fish he offered Gollum during their game of riddles. Gollum, of course, is also included in the set. This variant of Gollum is exclusive to this set, but has very minimal differences to the one that appears in the Shelob Attacks set from The Lord of the Rings series of sets.
LEGO Escape from Mirkwood Spiders 79001

The forest of Mirkwood is a central part of Middle-Earth, and plays an important part in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series of books and films. LEGO Escape from Mirkwood Spiders, the second set in the list of LEGO The Hobbit sets, depicts the moment in The Desolation of Smaug when some of the group are faced with giant spiders in the forest.
The set comes complete with 298 pieces and 4 minifigures, including Fili and Kili the Dwarves, Legolas, and Tauriel. Three of the minifigs are exclusive to this set, while the Legolas figure also appears in 2 other sets. Also included in the set are two giant buildable spiders, some ancient dark trees of Mirkwood, and plenty of great accessories.

LEGO An Unexpected Gathering is a must-have for any collector of the list of LEGO The Hobbit sets, and is by far the best-reviewed set of the entire series of LEGO The Hobbit. This set is based on a memorable scene from the first Hobbit movie, An Unexpected Gathering, and includes a scene from the movie where Bilbo Baggins and the Dwarves are gathered together for a party at Bag End in The Shire.
The set has 652 pieces and includes 6 minifigures – Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, and Bombur. Five of these minifig variants are exclusive to this set and don’t appear in other sets, with the exception being Gandalf, whom appears in multiple other sets. Also included in the set is Bilbo’s home, Bag End, which is built into an incredible hillside and extremely well designed. The set is rounded out with a host of accessories, such as cooking utensils and food items.

LEGO Barrel Escape is another welcome entry into the series of LEGO The Hobbit sets. This one depicts the important moment during The Desolation of Smaug when the Dwarves climb into barrels to escape from captivity, floating down the river out of reach from the orcs.
This set has 334 pieces and 5 minifigs, including Bilbo Baggins, Gloin, Oin, Mirkwood Elf Chief, and Mirkwood Elf Guard. Four of these minifigs are exclusive to this set, with the exception being Bilbo, which also appears in three other sets. Also included is the buildable dungeon where the dwarves were held captive, and an assortment of barrels, weapons, and accessories.

All of the variants of minifigs are exclusive to this set with the exception of Gandalf. The star of the show for this set, however, is of course the massive buildable dungeon, which includes a giant throne, rope bridge, and an assortment of booby traps, weapons, skulls, fire, and other accessories. Rounding out the set is of course a large model of The Goblin King (Great Goblin).
LEGO Dol Guldur Ambush 79011

LEGO Dol Guldur Ambush was the first LEGO set released in the second wave of LEGO The Hobbit sets, which launched in December 2013 to coincide with the release of the second movie in the trilogy. It is the smallest set in the 2013 line-up of sets and depicts a scene from The Desolation of Smaug.
This set comes with just 217 pieces, but the 3 minifigures included definitely add some value to the set. Inside the box are the minifigs of Beom and two Gundabad Orcs, and all three of these models are unique to this set. The centerpiece of the set is of course the dreary-looking archway complete with traps for the ambush. Although it doesn’t look like much, many reviewers of the set regarded the build to be quite enjoyable.
LEGO Mirkwood Elf Army 79012

If you are a minifigure collector, then perhaps one of your all-time favorites from the list of LEGO The Hobbit sets is LEGO Mirkwood Elf Army. In this one, The LEGO Group pull out all of the stops for fig enthusiasts and give us a feast of 6 different models in a single $29.99 package. This one is from The Desolation of Smaug and includes four elves and two orcs.
The set is complete with 6 minifigures, including two Gundabad Orcs, three Mirkwood Elves, and Thranduil. If you want to build an army of Mirkwood Elves, this is the battle pack you were looking for! Also included in the set is a portion of the forest fortress wall, with a beautiful sand-colored brick interlaced with the brown and green from the tree. Overall it’s a great set for a great price for those of us who love building up our collection of The Hobbit minifigures, especially if you are a fan of the Mirkwood Elf!
LEGO Lake-Town Chase 79013

LEGO Lake-Town Chase is a set based on the second movie in The Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. It depicts scenes from the incredible Lake-Town, which sits below the Misty Mountain and was a central part of the movie.
This set is made up of 470 pieces and includes 5 minifigs, 3 of which are exclusive to this set. In this one we get Bard the Bowman, Bilbo Baggins, Master of Lake-Town, Lake-Town Guard, and a unique version of Thorin Oakenshield in his blue Lake-Town outfit. The Lake-Town Guard and Bilbo Baggins figs both exist in other sets, while the other three only appear in this one.
The core part of the set is the buildable wooden buildings, complete with a jail cell, weapons rack, and an accessible roof area complete with a catapult. Also included is a wooden boat which the hobbits use to arrive at the small town. It’s a really great depiction of the scenes from the movie, and luckily this isn’t the only set to show us some part of Lake-Town!
LEGO Dol Guldur Battle 79014

The final LEGO set from the 2013 wave of The Hobbit sets based on The Desolation of Smaug is LEGO Dol Guldur Battle.
This is the largest of this wave of The Hobbit sets, with 797 pieces in the box and a massive 8 minifigures, including Azog, Gandalf, two Gundabad Orcs, Necromancer of Dol Guldur, Radagast the Brown, and a skeleton and statue. Most of these minifigures appear in other sets, with the exception of Necromancer, Radagast and the statue.
The core focus of this set is the massive fortress of Dol Guldur, which includes a tower, gate, and various staircases and sections of wall. The completed model captures the dark feel of the fortress from the movie, and the inclusion of various accessories such as skulls, flaming torches, and weapons, help to set the scene. It is a reasonable depiction of an important scene from the film, and was moderately well received by fans.

Kicking off the third wave of The Hobbit sets is LEGO Witch-King Battle, which is based on a scene from The Battle of the Five Armies, the third and final film in The Hobbit trilogy. The LEGO Group started small with this one, bringing us a quick and easy depiction of the important face-off.
This set has 101 pieces and 3 minifigures, including Elrond, Galadriel, and the Witch-King. All three minifigs are exclusive. There are other versions of Elrond from past sets, but this was the first time that Galadriel appeared in any LEGO set. The Witch-King is particularly menacing, dressed in all-white and branding a Morgul Blade.
In addition to the minifigures, we get a small buildable piece of terrain to help set the scene. This set was released in October 2014 and retired in July 2015, for a shelf life of around 9 months.
LEGO Attack on Lake-Town 79016

The second LEGO The Hobbit set to be based on the iconic Lake-Town is the 2014 release Attack on Lake-Town, set 79016. This one is focused on the events of the third movie in the trilogy, The Battle of the Five Armies, and is a much smaller set than Lake-Town Chase 79013.
This set contains 313 pieces and 5 minifigures, including Bain, Bard, Tauriel, and two Hunter Orcs. All five of these minifigs are exclusive to this set and don’t appear elsewhere. The centerpiece of the set is a large Lake-Town tower which houses the giant crossbow used to fight Smaug, the dragon. The build of this set is quite basic, and the completed model would benefit from some additional detail, but this is a worthy addition to the theme nonetheless.
LEGO The Battle of Five Armies 79017

LEGO The Battle of Five Armies is named after the third film in The Hobbit trilogy, and this set had a lot to live up to. It depicts the clash between men, Dwarves, Elves, the Orcs of Dol Guldur, and the Orcs of Mount Gundabad.
This set is complete with 472 pieces, which makes it the second-largest set in this 2014 wave of sets. It has 7 minifigures in the box, including Azog, Bard the Bowman, Dain Ironfoot, two Gundabad Orcs, Legolas, and Thorin Oakenshield. Many of them are exclusive to this set, with the exception of Legolas and Bard. The set also includes a large buildable beige tower, an array of weapons, a large ballista weapon, and the Great Eagle.
LEGO The Lonely Mountain 79018

The final set in the 2014 wave of LEGO The Hobbit sets is regarded by many to be one of the best sets from this theme overall, and an excellent attempt from The LEGO Group to round out the theme in style. LEGO The Lonely Mountain 79018 is a large set that depicts the events that unfolded inside the iconic mountain as the Dwarves come face-to-face with Smaug, the fearsome dragon.
This set has a large piece count of 866, which makes it the largest LEGO The Hobbit set to ever be released. It came with 5 minifigures, including Balin, Bilbo, Dwalin, Fili and Kili. All 5 of these minifigs are exclusive to this set and don’t show up anywhere else. The main focus of the set, however, is of course the massive dragon, Smaug. Consisting of a handful of beautifully molded parts that can be built together to form the dragon, Smaug’s red color and menacing appearance is an incredible component to this set, and a perfect way to round out this series of LEGO The Hobbit.
In addition to Smaug, Bilbo and the Dwarves, LEGO The Lonely Mountain also includes some buildable portions of Smaug’s lair, complete with gems and jewels, gold, and other treasures. The green and brown color scheme of the model works extremely well, and the finished product is a beautiful set with a lot of playability, but also looks great when displayed on a shelf.
