Fans of LEGO and fans of Indiana Jones rejoiced when this partnership was announced, and for a good reason! This is a crossover that is extremely well suited for both brands, and the partnership between The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm was a welcome addition to the world of LEGO.
LEGO Indiana Jones is a theme of sets from The LEGO Group that are based on the popular Indiana Jones movies starring Harrison Ford. The first sets in this theme were released in 2008 to coincide with the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. There were 16 core sets in the initial two waves of sets that were released, with the second wave bringing more scenes from older Indiana Jones movies to the theme when it launched in 2009, including the much-requested Temple of Doom in LEGO form.

The first set in the initial release of sets is also the smallest set from the first two waves of LEGO Indiana Jones sets. LEGO Motorcycle Chase depicts a scene from The Last Crusade where Indy and Henry Jones Sr. are chased by enemy soldiers.
The set had just 79 pieces, and included three minifigures – Indiana Jones, Henry Jones Sr., and a German Soldier. The soldier is the only minifig that is exclusive to this set, with Henry Jones appearing in one other, and this version of Indiana appearing in 15 sets in total. In addition to the minifigs, the set includes two motorcycles and some small pieces of scenery.

LEGO Race for the Stolen Treasure is a set from Raiders of the Lost Ark that depicts the fast-paced chase scene for the Ark between Indy and the enemy soldiers. This set was released in January 2008 and retired in July 2009, which gave it a shelf life of a year and a half.
With 272 pieces and 4 minifigures, Race for the Stolen Treasure is a highly-reviewed set and was much appreciated by the fans. It includes the minifigs for Indiana Jones and three German Soldiers, which is a welcome addition to the set, as it is rare to find this many military-based minifigures in a LEGO set.
The core focus of the set is the German truck and the jeep which are both well designed and detailed. A notable component here is the mounted machine gun on the back of the jeep, which once again is not something we often see in LEGO sets, which typically shy away from scenes that depict too much violence. The next list of Indiana Jones sets were released in Summer 2008, a few months after the launch of the theme. Jungle Duel is a set that is based on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was released that same year.

LEGO Jungle Cutter is one of the LEGO Indiana Jones sets that is incredibly unique. This one is from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and depicts a massive tank with large saws on the front, used for cutting through the dense jungle.
Jungle Cutter is complete with 511 pieces and 4 minifigures, including Colonel Dovchenko, Indiana Jones, and two Russian Guards. None of the minifigs are exclusive to this set, although Colonel Dovchenko only appears in one other set.
The star of the show in this set is of course the Jungle Cutter tank. It is extremely well designed, with a green and grey finish, and the tank even has a button which causes the model to explode. Also included are some trees, which help with setting the jungle scene for the set, and other accessories including a handful of ants. Overall, this is a great entry into the series!

The flagship set in the 2008 list of LEGO Indiana Jones sets is Temple of the Crystal Skull. This set depicts the all-important temple which acted as the location for some of the turning points of the movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It is the largest set that was released in any of the initial waves of LEGO Indiana Jones and was seen by many as a crucial set to own for any collector of the series.
This set had 929 pieces and a large count of 10 minifigures, including three Akator Skeletons, Indiana Jones, Irina Spalko, Mutt Williams, a Russian Guard, two Ugha Warriors, and a unique Skeleton complete with armor. All four of the skeletons are unique to this set and don’t appear elsewhere.
The core of the set is of course the buildable temple, which is a large model packed with fun scenes throughout. Here we see various booby traps and battles breaking out in the hallways of the temple as Indy and Mutt try to get to the Crystal Skull. Out of all of the Indiana Jones LEGO sets, this one potentially carries the most playability, with so many different scenes to act out for fans of the movie.

The first set in the list of LEGO Indiana Jones sets released in 2009 is Shanghai Chase. This was also the first time that a LEGO set was based on the beloved second movie in the Indiana Jones franchise, The Temple of Doom. It depicts a chase scene through the streets of Shanghai, where an extremely well-dressed Indy and friends attempt to escape from the gangsters.
The set is complete with 244 pieces and 5 minifigures, including Indiana Jones (wearing a Tuxedo), Short Round, Willie Scott, and two Shanghai gangsters. Four of the minifigs are exclusive to this set, including this variation of Indy, the gangsters, and Willie Scott.
The vehicles included in this set are excellently designed. The gangster truck is finished in black and grey, and there are some creative use of pieces to complete it, such as the castle window piece used as the grate on the front of the vehicle. Indy’s car adds a great contrast, in a beige color and with a removable fabric roof. Overall this set is a great addition to the LEGO Indiana Jones line-up.

The most important part of this set is of course the military plane, which is impressive in its size once it has been built. It consists of large plate parts which may require some care while handling, as the size of the plane could lead to pieces breaking if the builder is too rough. The fuel truck is also a welcome addition and helps to round out this set nicely.

The two airplanes are the focus of the set, and they both look fantastic. The all-grey enemy plane has a closed cockpit which looks fantastic, and the inclusion of the machine gun on Indy’s plane adds a nice touch that we don’t often see in LEGO sets.

Arguably the most anticipated set from the initial run of sets in the LEGO Indiana Jones theme was The Temple of Doom. This set was released in June 2009, and it was the last set in the original 2008 and 2009 waves of Indiana Jones LEGO sets to retire, when it exited the market in December 2010.
The Temple of Doom is complete with 652 pieces and 6 minifigures, including an open-shirt variant of Indiana Jones, Mola Ram, Short Round, Willie Scott, and two Temple Guards. All of these minifigs are exclusive to this set with the exception of Short Round, who also exists in the Shanghai Chase set.
The centerpiece of LEGO The Temple of Doom is of course the large buildable railway and cart that runs through the temple, which is extremely unique and a great depiction of the memorable scenes from the film. The track flows beneath the towering structures of the temple, and the entire set is extremely detailed.
